In the wake of Republicans’ sweep of the Ohio Legislature and other state offices, advocacy groups traditionally supported by Democrats are gearing up for budget and policy fights, the AP/Dayton Daily News reports.
During the next two-year session, Republicans will control both chambers of the Legislature, the governorship and the office of attorney general, among other state posts. Leaders in the Legislature said it is too soon to discuss whether social issues, such as abortion rights, will be on the agenda in the upcoming session. Republican state Sen. Tom Niehaus, who plans to run for Ohio Senate president, said he expects job growth to be the primary focus of the GOP-led Legislature.
NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Director Kellie Copeland noted that a proposal to ban abortion in Ohio was introduced the last time Republicans controlled the governor’s office and both chambers of the Legislature. “Our message to Ohio’s pro-choice majority is clear. Gov.-elect [John] Kasich, Attorney General-elect (Mike) DeWine and the new anti-choice controlled Ohio House represent a very serious threat to a woman’s right to choose in Ohio,” Copeland said. She added that private insurance coverage of abortion services also could be at risk in the next session (Smyth, Dayton Daily News, 11/3).
